According to the University of Ilorin branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Bola Tinubu administration has continued to exploit the lecturers’ struggles by inciting anger and hunger.

Speaking to reporters soon after a nonviolent demonstration to bemoan the situation of the country and the educational system, the union also labeled the Bola Tinubu-led administration as having the worst anti-labor policies.

The group claimed that after being tricked into hiring protest leaders, they are now acting against nature and have become increasingly anti-labor in their activities.

Comrade Felix Akanmu, the union’s branch head, stated that when the current administration has just taken office, expectations were high for a prompt resolution of their demands and uprisings.

He claimed that their expectations were based on the pseudodemocratic roles that a few well-known individuals who are currently in positions of power performed.

“We were deceived by bringing on board people who led protests in this country. But they are now acting contrary to nature and have been more anti-labour in their operations.

“As we speak, despite several efforts, the present government has not deemed it fit to meet ASUU officially. But we have a country to rescue and we shall overcome.

“The government, instead of committing itself to negotiated welfare packages and revitalisation/proper funding of our institutions, has conscientiously maintained lines of frustration, blackmail and use of hunger as weapons to demystify the essence of our struggles.

“The illegally dissolved and reconstituted governing council and boards of universities have been replaced by politicians,” Akanmu alleged.

ASUU has given the Federal Government a four-week ultimatum to comply with its demands or risk strike action.

ASUU chairman, Comrade Shehu El-Rasheed, spoke to reporters following a nonviolent protest at the Federal University of Kashere (FUK), Gombe state. He claimed that the protest was organized in response to their nonpayment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), withheld salaries, unpaid promotion arrears, and complete rejection of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System (IPPIS). He also threatened to go on strike when the ultimatum expired.
