US gymnastics Olympic trials results: Simone Biles dazzles; Kayla DiCello out
MINNEAPOLIS—It should come as no surprise that Simone Biles leads the standings following the opening night of competition at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Trials.
Even before Friday night, Biles—the current world champion and resident GOAT—was a given for the Paris squad, but her impressive score of 58.900 moved her one step closer to official status. The only person assured a position on the Olympic team is the trials’ highest all-around performer.
Suni Lee (56.025) and Jordan Chiles (56.400) are in second and third place going into Sunday night’s trials finale, which will determine the final five-person team.
The injuries were the real Friday night story, even looking past the top. Before hurting her left knee after a vault landing during warm-ups, global bronze medallist Shilese Jones was already dealing with a chronic shoulder problem.
Her sole competition was in uneven bars, where she excelled, due to the injury, which begs the issue of whether she will be fit and healthy for Paris.
Less than an hour later, Kayla DiCello also had an injury on vault that might turn out to be more catastrophic. She spent the rest of the night scratching herself after leaving the floor in a wheelchair.
